When storytelling meets science

MLC Presentation Design Consulting led a one-day workshop at the University of Messina with a clear goal: to demonstrate that even scientific data can be communicated in an effective, rigorous and memorable way.
Through MLC methodologies for presenting data and the conscious use of artificial intelligence tools such as Microsoft Copilot, participants discovered how to create effective slides through storytelling, visual storytelling and data visualization.
The result was, for many, a real breath of fresh air in the way of thinking about scientific communication.

cLIENT BACKGROUND
The University of Messina is a historic Italian academic institution committed to teaching and scientific research across a wide range of disciplines. Within this context, the Department of Chemical, Biological, Pharmaceutical, and Environmental Sciences (ChiBioFarAm) has stood out for its particularly forward-looking vision on the topic of scientific communication.
The Department recognized early on a need that has become increasingly central in the academic world: to produce valuable knowledge and also to communicate it in a clear, effective, and accessible way, both within the scientific community and in dialogue with students and the wider public.
From this awareness came the organization of the workshop in collaboration with MLC Presentation Design Consulting, with the aim of exploring new approaches to scientific data communication and integrating storytelling methodologies and artificial intelligence tools, without compromising scientific rigor and robustness.
cHALLENGE
In the academic and scientific world, presentations have an impact on at least two fundamental levels.
The first concerns research. Scientific discoveries are shared through large volumes of data, often presented in traditional, uninspiring and hardly memorable ways. There is still a widespread belief that effective communication belongs to marketing and is therefore distant from the seriousness of science.
The second level concerns teaching. Professors face the daily challenge of explaining complex concepts to students who are increasingly accustomed to visual, concise, and narrative languages. Making lessons more engaging without oversimplifying content is becoming a growing necessity.
Overcoming these cultural barriers and proving that storytelling and scientific rigor can coexist was the project’s true challenge.
MLC Consulting partnered with the University of Messina to bring data storytelling and artificial intelligence into the academic and scientific world.
Communicating complex scientific data in a clear, engaging, and memorable way.
Applying MLC methodologies for presenting data combined with AI tools like Microsoft Copilot.
More confident, effective and engaging scientific communication.

SOLUTION
MLC demonstrated, through concrete case studies and hands-on work, that scientific data can be told effectively when audience neurocognitive mechanisms are understood and the right tools are used.
Artificial intelligence, particularly Microsoft Copilot, was used as a creative accelerator, helping transform complex concepts into clear and engaging visuals and narratives.
The MLC approach began with an in-depth analysis of the audience. Before discussing tools, methodologies, or AI, the team immersed itself in the context of professors and researchers at the University of Messina, sharing their frustrations and challenges.
On one side, the need to communicate complex research projects. On the other, the need to teach in a more effective and engaging way. In both cases, the core issue was the same: telling science through data.
Once the context was understood, MLC worked to break down a key barrier: demonstrating that data presentation, storytelling, visual storytelling and data visualization are not only possible but useful in the scientific world.
Only after overcoming this cultural resistance did artificial intelligence come into play as a concrete tool. Microsoft Copilot was presented as an example of how AI can support researchers without replacing critical thinking, enhancing it instead.
During the workshop, a shared awareness emerged among professors and researchers: there is a strong need for new and more effective tools to communicate their work.
This “hunger” for innovative methodologies stems from the desire to communicate research data and results clearly and powerfully without sacrificing the integrity and complexity of science.
The goal is not to trivialize science, but to make it more accessible and memorable, both for students and for peers. Clear data communication helps break down the barriers between scientific knowledge and its audience, enabling broader dissemination and greater impact.
The workshop was designed by MLC in collaboration with the University of Messina’s academic staff, particularly Professor Carmelo Iaria, who played a key role in helping the team enter the academic and scientific environment of the university.
The process unfolded step by step by applying the MLC data presentation methodology to the scientific context.
The morning session focused on real case studies, showing how less traditional but more effective communication can work even with complex scientific data.
In the afternoon, the hands-on workshop allowed participants to get their hands dirty, using learned methodologies and AI tools such as Microsoft Copilot to transform scientific data and concepts into visual stories, clear slides and also creative comic strips to tell science.
RESULTS
Attention in the classroom remained high throughout the entire day, with questions during both the theoretical and practical sessions.
Professors, researchers, and students increased their confidence in scientific presentations, learning how to simplify slides and communicate more effectively. AI is now seen as an ally for enhancing their work, not a replacement for expertise.
One of the most impactful exercises challenged researchers to communicate science through comics, each based on their own research field, an innovative way to make science accessible to different audiences.

CONCLUSION
This project demonstrates that data presentation is not a skill reserved for the business world. It is a cross-disciplinary methodology that can and should also be applied in scientific and academic environments.
When data, storytelling and artificial intelligence are integrated with method and awareness, science becomes clearer, more accessible and more memorable without losing rigor.
CLIENT FEEDBACK
The University of Messina expressed great satisfaction with the workshop and its impact on participants. Professors, researchers, and students particularly appreciated the immediate practical application of what they learned during the afternoon session.
The project paves the way for future collaborations and new editions of the workshop.
